WITHOUT the injuries that plagued them down and probably the unlikely calls in crucial games, the hard-fighting Sta. Lucia Realtors could have achieved more than a third place trophy and quarterfinals finish.
The dynamic duo of the Realtors – Kelly Williams and Ryan Reyes – and even Nelbert Omolon were down with respective injuries that gave other teams the advantage to win against the 2008 Philippine Cup champions.
Williams, who succumbed to a rare blood disorder after the All-Star Games last April in Panabo Davao, did not play for nine straight games especially in the last three, when the Realtors lost to Burger King, 1-2, in their best-of-three quarterfinals series.
But Williams gathered 32.2 statistical race points to lead the Most Valuable Player trophy, which later went to Ginebra spitfire Jay-Jay Helterbrand.
He led Sta. Lucia with 14.6 points and 10.9 rebounds in the last KFC Philippine Cup, where Sta. Lucia finished third place after beating San Miguel Beer, 99-97.
Reyes, the do-it-all guard, did not play his last game – Game 3 against Burger King – due to hamstring injury. Aside from that, the 2008 rookie of the year wasn’t healthy this previous season due to sore back injury.
“I promised to be healthy next season 100 percent,” said Reyes.
Despite the sad endings, head coach Boyet Fernandez is confident the Realtors will bounce back this coming season with a healthy line up which includes 2008 MVP Williams.
“Kelly (Williams) will go under therapy soon, so he will be healthy next season,” said Fernandez, who noted that the practice of the team resumes on July 20 at Sta. Lucia Mall. “We’re now looking for next season and we’re hoping to strengthen our roster.”
Right now, he said, Joseph Yeo, Omolon, Norman Gonzales, Dennis Daa and Dennis Miranda, among others are planning to undergo rigid training to intensify their performance next season.
Sta. Lucia Realty, meanwhile, picks at sixth in the coming PBA Rookie Draft in August 2 at Market, Market, Market in Taguig City and Fernandez said the team will select the best talent available there.

SLR, fans, read from the news that there are 46 players whose contracts expire by end of July, this includes big MEN like : Mamaril, Reavis, Menk, Pena among others. Again, lets do hope management is doing there best to make the team exciting and competitive next season as Coach Boyet has said.

i’m a marlou fan back from his ginebra days, i know how good a player he was. But now age really bothers him a lot. i’M sad to say this but i think our team have to move on and make soem adjsutment. especially to rebuild our young guns, but to do this we should adjust our salary cap, and the only way to do this is to let go marlou. sorry marlou i don’t have anything against you. but thats the only way i see to rebuilt the team. anyway its coach boyets call…

coach boyet, what are you plans this coming season, sino ba ang mag i-stay at mawawala sa team? anong plans mo [ara lumakas at maging championship contender ang team ulit. Sana mapunuan mo ang mahihinang position sa team, guard, forwards and centers.

SLR needs new breed of bigmen and altleast 2 new guards, both shooting or a point or rather offguards.
-Coronel is inconsistent and as well as the veteran Mendoza, and esp he’s past his prime already. That’s why SLR needs new guards that could provide solid stats from bench and could possibly be a solid back-up for Ryan if ever he’s injured again. SLR also needs a help for D’Ninja at guard position. At this point Lance Convento, Cris Timberlake, Pacana, Duncil, K Dela Pena, and Juntilla are worth the spot.
-I know that the mngt is keen in adding youth to their frontline. I hope they will make a wise decision as a lot of bigmen are/ will be free agents this season. Either from Gabby Espinas, Sam Eman, Quinahan, Bono, Mamaril and Se would be great additions for the team.

Things that SLR Management needs to do are;
1. Get rid of those 3 veterans na hindi na nag ko contribute sa games, ang laki na ng mga sahod wala naman masyado pakinabang.
2. Get players from the free agent market, hindi naman kailangan na mga big time names basta mapapakinabangan..un naman ang kailangan e.
3. Kung wala rin lang makukuha na big man sa draft, i trade na lang ang rights sa future draft next year
