STA. LUCIA Realty absorbed its first loss Sunday after winning first two straight games in the 35th Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Philippine Cup.

The Sta. Lucia Realtors could not handle the pressure spewed by the Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters, falling to an 83-100, at the Araneta Coliseum.

Joseph Yeo and Nelbert Omolon scored 17 points each, while Gabby Espinas had 16 and Ryan Reyes contributed 11 points for the Realtors.

The Tropang Texters, working on a sleek running game, broke away in the third period and never looked back en route to a third straight win following earlier victories over Smart Gilas and Rain or Shine.

Mark Cardona poured in a game-high 25 points with Jason Castro, Jimmy Alapag, Nic Belasco and Ali Peek adding at least 11 points each.

Establishing control in the third, the Texters kept the pace all the way to the finish to preserve their clean slate while dealing the Realtors their first loss in three starts.

Going down the drain were the big numbers of Joseph Yeo, Nelbert Omolon, Gabby Espinas, Ryan Reyes and Kelly Williams.

Talk n Text ran and gunned at the start, taking the first period at 22-18 and the half at 48-42.

Castro, Alapag and Cardona starred for the team as it beat Sta. Lucia by 12, 16-4, on fastbreaks in the first two quarters of play.

Individual Scores:

Talk n Text 100 – Cardona 25, Castro 16, Alapag 12, Belasco 12, Peek 11, Ritualo 8, De Ocampo R. 6, Carey 6, De Ocampo Y. 4, Escobal 0, Isip 0.

Sta. Lucia 83 – Yeo 17, Omolon 17, Espinas 16, Reyes 11, Williams 9, Daa 6, Urbiztondo 5, Pacana 2, Waters 0, Larong 0, Misolas 0, Aquino 0.

Quarterscores: 22-18; 48-42; 76-62; 100-83

Give the new SLR team a chance. You were all excited about them when they were winning and now you are complaining after one loss. This is not supportive and does not accomplish anything. Be encouraging and positive and this will help our team to win. The new players getting limited minutes cannot be the reason for this loss. We win as a team and lose as a team. It could be worse, we could be 0-3 but we still have a winning record. Keep the SLR faith.

The coach must put more faith and trust in the new players.Give them the approval to play their own game, and you will see the results.Everyone on this team is capable of scoring 30 points a game. This team will get better in time just have FAITH.

I actually have to give credit to Dream League friend Dan Rosen, who writes for SLAMonline (e.g., insider article on Kevin Garnett’s knee). He sent me an email the other day about the player in the Philippines Basketball Association (PBA) who punched a fan and was subsequently suspended for the entire season — and the season just started!

Of course, a quick Google on Josh Urbiztondo is always a required exercise everytime I get the occasional news tip on the PBA. After all, he did help my Dream League Bay Area select team win the 2008 Gotham Games tourney in NYC. The tournament was held by Dream League New York and they named Urbiztondo tournament MVP. It was an amazing experience (good and bad!) coaching him.

To my amazement, a quick look at Urbiztondo’s PBA team roster, the Santa Lucia Realtors, revealed that former #3 PBA draft pick Ryan Reyes is on his team too! Why am I amazed? Well, because Reyes was also a one-time Dream League tournament MVP (unfortunately, not for my team!). Specifically, Reyes was the MVP of the 2006 Asian American National Championship held annually in Las Vegas.

    But that’s not all!

I easily could’ve missed this, but buried down at uniform #22 on the Realtors’ roster is Chris Pacana! Who’s that? Well, the co-MVP of our 2004 Summer Vegas Tournament, of course! [Note: Our Asian American National Championship didn't happen until 2005.]

I’m so happy I had the time back in the day to write those reports on the Vegas tourney. Props to the DLNY crew for the write-up on Urbiztondo. So, you think you got what it takes to make basketball your profession? Try this on for size…

    * Pacana: 34 pts, 9 reb, 4 stl in a 6-point championship loss, playing on a scrap team that doesn’t normally organize for tournaments, against the legendary Filpino Bay Area Heads hoop tourney squad.
    * Reyes: 18 pts, 10 reb in a 9-point championship shutdown of legendary Filipino tournament squad, the Stockton Ballers.
    * Urbiztondo: 32 pts in a 7-point championship win over the stacked Dream League New York all-star squad, which has been doing some damage out East in 2008-09.

I remember Pacana being about 6′1″, maybe 6′2″ or barely 6′3″ with shoes (he’s listed at 6′1″), and having sick handles. He was a smooth handler, less of an AI-like lateral juke and more like the MJ dip-your-shoulder-and-bye-bye drive. He was left-handed. His outside shot was a little suspect, but man, those moves to the hoop. Pretty.

Reyes was like Billups, but not as buffed (not many people are as buffed as Chauncey, though). Just an incredibly strong guard, tall. Strong bones. He’s 6′2″ and can be listed at 6′3″ (with shoes), which by Asianballer standards, is a big ballhandler. A very deliberate style of play. Nothing terribly fancy, but just very composed, didn’t lose the ball, the kind of guy you just don’t worry about. Very fundamental and athletic, yet not that flashy. Hard to describe.

Conversely, Urbiztondo’s like a flash of lightning. He’s only about 5′9″ although the Sta Lucia roster ridiculously lists him at 6′1″. His heart must beat like a hummingbird. I mean, you just will…not…catch…him. NBA speed. I mean, if he had a bigger frame, holy smokes, he’d be playing in the NBA, I kid you not. Urbiztondo’s outside touch isn’t the prettiest, but it’s getting better and the thing is, he can set up his set shot because he’s got more gears than you. A truly special player in that I can’t even make any NBA comparisons!

It’s really weird. It’s as if the GM of Sta Lucia came and saw all three tournament runs. On one side of the spectrum, you have lightning in a bottle with Urbiztondo. On the other end you have the no-nonsense Reyes. And in between you have the guy who can weave a thread through the defense in Pacana.

Oddly, I’d put them all at point guard as well. To point out the obvious, you could build three different Asian tourney teams around these guys.

I’d pay money to watch them go at it in Sta Lucia practice scrimmages.

Losing is Part of the Game !
Kaya okay lang iyong nangyari last night. It’s a learning experienced. For three games, our standing is 2 wins against 1 loss. Not bad since our team was ranked 2nd to the last in this tournament. Lucia naten. Remember, maraming teams ang malakas ang line-up.

Mga guys until when ang contracts nina Marlou Aquino at Paolo Mendoza? Till December of 2009 na lang ba?

Who do you think ang pwedeng ipalit kay Paolo Mendoza? For me its Edwin Asoro since nasa free agency na siya. Kay Marlou Aquino ? Devonn Harp.

Bawi na lang next next game sa bench lang tayo medyo mahina talaga and sa center spot secured na ang cornerstone nang team with kelly, joseph ,ryan and bitoy along with new comer gabby espinas who is a work horse in rebounding,I Consider the forward combo of kelly willams and Gabby Espinas as one of the most athletic and best in the league,Good luck sa next game coach boyet and the rest of the team Godbless !!!

this was what i was waiting for… for the team to lose. cause its obvious (in our first 2 games) na there are still some works to be done regarding sa team. slr need some new plays, players are just standing on one corner waiting for the ball to come. yung plays nila sobrang obvious na tsaka madaling mabasag. sana makapag adjust na sila agad . good luck to the team.

Let’s support Sta. Lucia even though we lost against TnT. Josh and Chris will improve in their suceeding games, kulang pa lang siguro sila sa diskarte at kumpiyansa. I suggest though to SLR management that they get 2 or 2 offensive players from the FA list pag di talaga mag-click sina Larong, Misolas, Jaime and Waters.

Coach Boyet, why not look into Ian Saladaga, Edwin Asoro and James Sena? These 3 are offensive and talented players who were not given the opportunity to play in the PBA. Ian Saladaga is a 6′2 SG who can shoot and slash to the basket. He plays like Hontiveros and plays for Cebuana Lhuillier sa Liga Pilipinas. Edwin Asoro is a 6′3 banger who is not afraid to mix it up and is a younger version of Asaytono. James Sena has post-up moves and can play the PF or center slot position.

  • Bernard
    Tuesday, 27 October 2009 at 4:49 pm

I agree with you dlanor77 Di me familiar kay saladaga pero edwin asoro and james sena would be ok young big man na tiyak makakatulong agad sa team and kahit papano would ease up the burden ni kelly and gabby in the frontline position, Hopefully next year makakuha tayo nang isang true center through free agency and the draft ,sa opinion ko lang kasi yun ang weakness nang first five natin, Hopefully maimprove din natin yung bench natin next year…Goodluck guys sa next game : )

If mag expire ang contracts nina Aquino and Mendoza this December. Good option sina Homer Se and Edwin Asoro. Gusto kong lumaro si Asoro. Fighter din ito at solid kung maglaro. Kunin na naten at bka maunahan pa tyo ng ibang teams.

  • rapsapapa
    Tuesday, 27 October 2009 at 5:23 pm

Bout HOMER SE, i think pwede na siya pagtiyagaan. I mean for 1 conference. Case to case basis ang performance. Good defender at rebounder din kasi si Homer Se.

ManLulupa, agree, need to look for younger guys to replace Marlou and Paolo. Marlou and Paolo should know better that they cant be at pace with the younger guys, they have already left their legacy and mark in the league, they dont have anything to prove anymore. Time for new bloodlines who is faster and quicker.True enough, it was not TNTs big men that made the damage, coz alam natin we can match up with their TNTs big men. We can even match up with SMB and Giants Big men, that should not be a problem. Our problem is our lack of 1 and 2 position ( PG and SG )to support Ryan and Joseph. Josh , Chris and Ardy should prove their worth this early.Good Luck SLR, next game BK, kaya natin bumangon after 1 loss.

Good day to everyone! Dapat maging spark from the bench si Josh and chris ang mag step up. Okay lng kahit natalo since the breaks did not go sta.lucia’s way. We can make that loss a motivation to our next game. kayang kaya ang burger king. Good luck. To Boyet you are doing a good Job. I’m always praying for you and the team. i really know that marami na naman ang mag react sa nangyaring natalo ang team but i really appreciate all your comments constructive man o alam nyo na. a loss is a loss but what matters with me is how we played the game and it was a humbling experience for everyone on the team.

nagpapasalamat ako at least maaga pa lang at nalaman na namin ang mga dapat namin e adjust, credit to talk and text they really came out to play that night and i congratulate them for that.

sa akin lang, sana suportahan ninyo ang team natin matalo o manalo man tayo. we still have 16 games to go in the elimination and its still a long way to go, rest assure po na gagawin po ng team ang lahat para mapaligaya kayo. to all the believers keep on supporting.

mga repaks ok naman line-up natin..kailangan lng natin konting pasensya kc nga madami bago sa team natin..urbiztondo may ibubuga to mga tol kailangan lng nya ng more exposure sa court at confidence..once makuha nya un i think he can contribute..1 loss pa lng yan para sakin mas ok line-up ng SLR kesa dati..oo magaling sa depensa c denok pero lack sya sa offense at malaki pa sweldo nito..tingnan nyo sa SMB wala din sya maipakita..c espino naman accept na natin na wala na sya sa team and beside aging na sya at d k din gusto laro nito ever since pa..try to evaluate his game most of the time ball hog tlaga ito ang tagal mag decide kung ano gagawin and the result is always turnover at ipinagpapatuloy nya yan style nyang yan sa coke he he..oo magaling sya sa depensa pero kulang sya sa rebounding like marlou he he..remember SLR is always the worst team in rebounding? pumalit sa kanya espinas in 3 games puro duble double at maganda ave. rebs. ng SLR ngaun lalo na sa off. reb. bec. espinas and williams…ang kailangan lang natin konting balasa sa mga player at sna e mapuna ni coach yan kc after ng first five bigla na lang bench player na kapalit eh larong? he he..cguro kailangan lang ni coach ng bagong experiment try nya gamitin c waters, jaime at benitez para naman malalim ang bench natin..sa palagay ko mas may maiicontribute tong mga ito kesa kay larong na wla din naman gnagawa sa loob wla naman ako makita mgandang depensa sa kanya tsk tsk..at sana bawasan ni coach playing time ni kwill kc nga halos 48 mins. sya naglalaro kaya nauubos din energy nya sa laro..dapat ibang mins. nya ibigay kay wters at jaime nsa diskarte lang yan kung pano mo cla gagamitin ng tama..tnx coach suggestion lng po..pero matalo manalo SLR parin..gudluck ky reyes sana d matindi injury nya..kay espinas saludo ako sau ang bagsik mo maglaro puro double double kaagad..at kay williams sana bawasan nlng pag tira nya sa labas dapat s loob sya mag laro at the ninja yeo ibalik mo sna ang bagsik mo sa laro gudluck..

Nero, let me correct the problem on the guard position.First,Cardona and Castro scored at will over Yeo(20pts).Don’t get me wrong.Yeo has been an offensive threat, but lacks in defense.Ryan was not an offensive threat in this game because of his ankle.Everytime the guards passed inside they missed their layups, but without pointing fingers the team had no fast breaks, no defense, no shooting(.367%)and just overall were lathargic, however, let’s see if they get back on track vs. BK.

What are plans of the management and coaching staff of TEAM SLR? – if ever na hinde na i-renew ng SLR ang contracts nila we can consider EDWIN ASORO, JAMES SEÑA or even HOMER SE thru free agency. We can consider also LEO NAJORDA from Barako Bull since hinde na yata siya nabibigyan ng playing time ng mother team niya.

@Siblay. No problem with Ryan and Joseph, they will always give their 110% per game, sayang na may ina-indak si Ryan sa kanyang ankle, hopefully not serious coz we really need his presence at 1 or 2. What Coach need to look for, is his backup guards, dapat magstep up na si Josh, Chris at si Ardy, their support is very minimal for the past 3 games the 3 averaged only 6 pts per game but provided a good 5 assist per game.Must increase their support to about 10 pts per and at least the same assist. Also suggest to give 5 – 10 mins playing time for Chito, Charles and in the future Kelvin coz this is needed to rest KWill and Gabby.

eto ang hindi magandang mangyari ang ma burn out ang mga key players natin sabi ni coach na ginagawa nila lht pero i think those players na nabanggit will not help our team to win a title again.maski role players nga mahirap tawagin sila kasi they really dont know ang role nila sa team.Lahat ng back up players natin cnt play long min. cnt deliver sa mga crucial stages they are not reliable players na who could step up big time.Nandyan na iyan kung ayw nila baguhin ang team so be it try natin ng 1 conference and if the result is a big flop sana nmn mag adjust tayo nxt conference hindi masama i admit ang pag kk mli dpt lng ayusin pra sa susunod good result will come out.

About dun sa nagtanong kay Saladaga, player ito from Cebu – USJR Jaguars, same school na nanggaling si Larong. Thursday, 29 October 2009 at 5:06 pm

wala tayong shooters masyado. kunin kaya si cabahug?

  • RR
    Thursday, 29 October 2009 at 7:53 pm

  • RR
    Thursday, 29 October 2009 at 7:57 pm

si macapagal at jun2x cabatu i think would fit perfectly sa team natin good shooters sila at magaling mag penetrate ang mahalaga may opensa na kailangan tlga ntin kasi nga wala tayo bench players. misolas larong out na iyan sa team!

  • oshosh
    Thursday, 29 October 2009 at 8:25 pm

injured si mark macapagal kaya siya nasa reserve list ng coke.. kapag gumaling si mark i am sure balik din siya sa roster.. junjun cabatu is a free agent but i dont think we need him now… IMO we need someone like yancy de ocampo a guy who can give us ceiling and at the same time can score inside and outside..

    Friday, 30 October 2009 at 11:11 am

coach boyet.mas maganda siguro kung hindi laging penetration ang laro ni k-will…y dont you set him in pick n roll…sa tingin ko mas effective sya dun…suggestion ko lang un coach.thanks po

  • istokwa
    Friday, 30 October 2009 at 11:13 am

pwede rin ung si joseph yeo ang magpepenetrate tas si k-will ang cutter natin…kelangan kc ng team natin more passing….tsaka good spacing…..

  • paul tan
    Friday, 30 October 2009 at 11:22 am

  • RR
    Friday, 30 October 2009 at 11:43 am

the team needs back up players for kelly, omolon a type of player na has a good outside shooting and can penetrate aswell. If macapagal is only injured ok lang we need cabatu kasi may outside shooting at can penetrate he can play the 2-3 position and remeber he stands 6′4 kunmpara nmn kay larong at misolas mas magagamit cya.We have 2 big guys pa na hindi na test benitez and delrosario sabi ni coach na benitez can hit perimeter shots so i should say lets give him a try.
We need 2 more players na can score and ease some load sa mga starters natin.Sabi nga nila defense wins ball games offense wins championships.

  • RR
    Friday, 30 October 2009 at 11:46 am

Urbiztondo fires 24 as Realtors upend Whoppers
    30 Oct 2009
Undrafted Fil-Am rookie Joshua Urbiztondo erupted for 24 points on 9-for-16 shooting and added 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals, carrying the Sta. Lucia Realtors to a 101-93 win over the Burger King Whoppers in the 2008-2009 KFC PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta COliseum.

“I just tried to bring out the energy of the team and I think I was able to do that while also having some point production,” said the 26-year-old Fil-Am tracing his roots in Bulacan.

“Much credit belonged to the guy. He stepped up while Ryan Reyes played limited minutes due to an ankle sprain,” said Sta. Lucia coach Boyet Fernandez.

Ryan Reyes had 15 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals, Dennis Daa added 15 markers, Nelbert Omolon 10 and Kelly Williams was his usual double-double self with 14 points and 14 boards along with 4 steals for the Realtors, who now occupies solo second with a 3-1 win-loss slate.

“With Ryan injured, we changed our rotation, getting Joshua to play the point and sliding Ryan at No. 2. It worked well and I think it deserves a second look. We’ll analyze things baka pwedeng ulitin ng ulitin,” said Fernandez.

    coach boyet,

Baka may budget pa kayo pls look for FA like Homer for rebounding kesa kay Aquino.

I was surprised that the breakout game came this early for a rookie. Congrats Josh! Sana tuloy-tuloy na’to. Cocah baka pwede nman ibabad si Charles Waters at Benitez to give them confidence. Goodluck SLR on your next game.

d na naman ako nagkamali gaya ng nsabi ko nung una eh tlagang may potential c joshurbz break lang kailangan..maganda gnawa ni coach lumalim bench natin he he..kc nung una after first five eh c larong nlng ang bench na papalit he he.. coach request lang cgurado mas lalalim pa bench natin kung try mo palaruin at bigyan ng break c waters at jaime.. c waters muna instead of larong for defense and rebounding maganda pamalit kay espinas sa PF position pwede din i rotate kay williams para d naman sya sobrang babad sa loob db? c jaime naman pang break ng zone depense d tlaga mabigyan ng break eh pamalit kay yeo o reyes pwede cla tatlo mag rotate kc position naman ni reyes 1 and 2 db? suggest ko wag muna gamitin c larong o misolas..
