K-Will’s scores big as SLR wins

COACH Boyet Fernandez has often used his pick-and-roll play and effectively found the right guy to finish it perfectly: Kelly Williams.

Williams scattered 15 of his 25 points in the final period mostly on different perfect set pick-and-roll plays that powered Sta. Lucia Realty to a close 95-91 win against Rain or Shine on Wednesday in the resumption of 35th PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.

The 6-foot-7 Williams registered 9-of-17 shooting in the field and sank 7-of-12 free throws to go along with 19 rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals in 44 minutes of play to strengthen the Realtors outright quarterfinals bid with an 8-6 slate.

Despite the win, Fernandez is hoping to sweep their four remaining games to get a clear shot of an outright quarterfinals slot at the middle of the team standings.

“We can’t be complacent at this point because there are four games left with us,” said Fernandez, referring to last game assignments Burger King, Alaska, Barako Bull and Purefoods in the double elimination round.

“I’m hoping we can sweep all our remaining games. We just need to play tough,” he said. “Before the game I told the players we need to win all our five remaining games if we want an easy way into the quarters. I’m glad they responded well.”

Joseph Yeo scored 12 points and back-up Jason Misolas contributed 10 points and nine rebounds also for the Realtors. Josh Urbiztondo had nine points, while Nelbert Omolon collected 10 rebounds and posted nine points.

Ryan Reyes dished out six assists and got eight points, while Marlou Aquino churned out eight points.

William’s two free throws with 1:59 remaining tied the count at 89 then hit a tough turnaround shot to put the Realtors ahead to stay after a 91-8 lead.

He scored another jumper before Reyes made two free throws to complete an 8-0 wind-up that took the fight away from the Elasto Painters.

“Kelly was really terrific tonight. He stepped up in the closing seconds and made two crucial shots. That’s why he is the leader of this team,” said Fernandez.

The Realtors will go for win No. 9 on Friday against struggling Burger King.

Starting the New Year on a high note, Sta. Lucia posted the games biggest margin at 28-18 late in the first quarter although the game was close the rest of the way, the count being tied seven times.

Rain or Shine, which dropped to a 4-11 slate, appeared to have seized the momentum when Jeff Chan knocked in a three that put the Elasto Painters ahead, 89-87, with 2:12 remaining.

But they went scoreless in the next 1:30 minutes, giving the Realtors the chance.

Gave Norwood scored 18 points and Chan added 17 for the Elasto Painters, who missed 14 of 31 free throws and 8 of 17 in the fourth.

Sta. Lucia out-rebounded ROS, 62-42 and enjoyed a 15-6 edge off the offensive boards in the second half that netted them 14 points.

Individual Scores:

STA. LUCIA 95 – Williams 25, Yeo 12, Misolas 10, Urbiztondo 9, Omolon 9, Reyes 8, Aquino 8, Espinas 5, Mendoza 5, Pacana 4, Daa 0.

RAIN OR SHINE 91 – Norwood 18, Chan 17, Mercado 14, Laure 13, Cruz 10, Tang 7, Arana 4, Reyes 3, Hrabak 3, Ibanes 2, Telan 0.

QUARTERS: 28-20, 47-51, 71-69, 95-91.

What’s wrong with Pacana??? Does he even know how to pass?? When he was trapped by the ROS players, he just passed the ball to Solomon then in the next possession he made an errand pass again. After which, Coach B can’t take it anymore so he replaced Pacana. Paolo can still shoot but just don’t let him handle the ball. I hope we can get free agents like Vergara, Bautista or Topex who are great ball handlers. God bless our team!

  • Bob-Ong Pacana
    Thursday, 7 January 2010 at 11:39 am

Nice Game… Nakakakaba pag si Pacana na nagdala ng bola, parang more often than not, he’ll commit a turnover. Just my 2 cents!

I’m very happy about the win though, sana sa Friday ganun pa rin energy natin at ang defense ganun pa din. I hope Machine Gun Kelly will have another spectacular showing on Friday… pati buong team. I hope to be there in Cuneta on Friday.

Last night SLR was more than lucky rather than hard work. Sama ng 3 pts shooting natin, 13% lang vs RoS – 43%, c Josh 1 out of 8, ryan 0 out of 4, Yeo 1 out of 5.Angat lang tayo kauniti sa 2 pts field Goal 41% vs 39%. Kaya nga, swerte lang talaga tayo kagabi na pumasok ung eng game shoots ni KWILL, anyway a Win is a Win.Sa next game dapat ma-improve ang accuracy natin lalo na sa 3 pts para hindi sayang! Kaya natin ung last 4 games, though medyo mahirap labanin ang Alaska at Purefoods, pero close ung first games natin sa kanila sa first round, kayang kaya ngayon.

Avid fan po ako ng TEAM SLR. Just asking lang po regarding sa status ng contract nina Marlou Aquino and Paolo Mendoza. You said before na expiring contract na sila at the end of December 2009, pero baket patuloy na naglalaro pa rin sila sa team?

About sa trade rumors, gaano ka-reliable ang source naten bout this?

Still available sina Leo Najorda, Edwin Asoro, James Seña, Homer Se and Topex Robinson.

Sta. Lucia playing like Devils in Philippine Cup
    BY MICO HALILI
    January 07, 2010 | 09:57AM
There was a time (a very long time) when watching a PBA game involving Sta. Lucia play felt like watching a chess match, albeit, between predictable, uncreative, and leaden players.

It didn’t help that Sta. Lucia’s offense was, for the most part of the past decade, built around the low-post, low-risk and low-excitement games of Dennis Espino and Marlou Aquino. That has all changed. For good.

Today, Sta. Lucia’s style of play not only has a pulse, but the Realtors actually do a very good job in making your pulse race. The Sta. Lucia brand of adrenaline rush comes in many forms: Kelly Williams finishing an alley-oop slam-dunk; Ryan Reyes stealing the ball and scampers to finish a coast-to-coast layup against three defenders; Joseph Yeo hanging in the air long enough to send a text message in mid-flight before scoring the jumper; Or Marlou simply deciding to flex his muscles and show people he’s still around.

It would be unfair to pin the blame Sta. Lucia’s previously moribund existence squarely on Dennis and Marlou. They did what they had to do. They did what they were extremely good at.

The arrival of Kelly Williams, however, marked the dawn of a new style of play that now defines every Sta. Lucia game: Frenzied, fierce, fast. This is now a franchise that depends on speed and tenacity. At times, the Realtors play at such a frenetic pace, they make people forget about their unbelievably bland bermuda green uniforms.

Denok Miranda did a spectacular job adding defensive muscle and mayhem during his stint with the Realtors. In his place, rookie point guard Josh Urbiztondo has added a different dimension.

But Urbiztondo is a wild-card. Some days he looks like he’s ready to join the Mythical Team at season’s end. Some days he looks like he’s the free agent rookie that he really is. He’s undrafted yet unperturbed. He has the nerve to issue no-look passes, take three-pointers five full steps away from the three-point line and play like he belongs. What moxie for a player who hardly saw action in his last post-season in the PBL.

So I suppose audacity is the operative word. Bitoy Omolon has the audacity to play A-1 defense. Or Dennis Daa has the audacity to shoot and shoot, period. Sta. Lucia is a team of brazen cagers soundly orchestrated by Head Coach Boyet Fernandez. I’d love to coach a team like this with players who happily smash into opponents and stars who maximize their athletic gifts. The Realtors, at long last, are no longer polite.

Once upon a time, the most exciting part of any Sta. Lucia game was a classic up-and-under-the-defender’s-kilikili shot from Marlou. Nowadays, an eye-popping Marlou slam-dunk is just ube on the halo-halo. The Realtors is an audacious team propelled by audacious players. And they have the nerve to play like they’re the most exciting team in the PBA today. Oftentimes, I can’t help but agree. MH

If ever we get a player in the trade, i hope it’s not Danny S. Yes, he is arguably the most talented player ever played in the PBA but he is injury prone. I can’t even remember when was the last time he completed a season or even a conference.

    GOOD LUCK SLR!

Sta. Lucia and Burger King, meanwhile, square off at 7:30 p.m. with the Realtors looking to improve their bid for the Top Five and the Whoppers out to clinch an outright slot in the wildcard round.

The Realtors, at 8-6, are in pursuit of the Purefoods Giants (9-6), the Barangay Ginebra Kings (10-6), the Talk n Text Tropang Texters (10-6), the Alaska Milk Aces (11-2) and the Beermen (12-3).

The Whoppers, at 5-10, on the other hand, pace the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters (4-11), the Coca-Cola Tigers (3-12) and the Energy Boosters (2-12) in their battle for wildcard berths.

Alex Cabagnot makes his first appearance with the Whoppers as they take on the Realtors in a crucial match.

BK coach Yeng Guiao said they effected some changes in their lineup with hopes of shaking things up.

“We’ve tried everything. We fought hard, but it’s still not enough to translate to victories. We felt we really needed to make a gamble at this stage,” said Guiao.

The Whoppers also re-acquired the services of Wesley Gonzales in exchange for Gary David and Chico Lanete.

“This is our last push. If we don’t make the necessary changes right away, we might not be able to make the playoffs. I think Alex Cabagnot is worth the gamble,” said Guiao.

SLR coach Boyet Fernandez said they’re also determined to make good in the closing phase of the double-round eliminations to get a shot at an outright quarters seat.

“If we want easy passage to the quarters, we need to win all our last four games. I think it’s doable. We take it one game at a time,” said Fernandez.
