STA. LUCIA Realty fell to the do-or-die wildcard round after losing to Purefoods, 78-88, on Friday in the end of the elimination round of 35th Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Philippine Cup at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City.

Although Sta. Lucia mentor Boyet Fernandez is disappointed when his team missed an outright quarterfinals slot, he remained confident they can make a run and get into the quarters by sweeping the dangerous wildcard round.

The Realtors are set to face the Rain or Shine Elasto Paintmasters on Sunday at the same venue in the wildcard round at 4:00pm.

Joseph Yeo tried his best to carry Sta. Lucia especially in times when Ryan Reyes and Kelly Williams struggled on the floor.

He finished with 17 points and five assists to lead the Realtors.

Veteran Marlou Aquino, who played his best back-to-back games after scoring 17 points against Barako Bull, posted 14 points, while rookie Josh Urbiztondo contributed 13 points and Williams had 11 and 16 rebounds with four assists and two blocks.

Sta. Lucia finished the double round elimination at sixth with a 10-8 win-loss slate.

The Giants played a solid game all night, frustrating the Realtors in their bid to get a playoff crack at an outright quarterfinals entry.

The Giants engaged the Realtors in a defensive battle, trailing by four, in the first quarter, before surging ahead, 41-35, at halftime.

They also established firm control in the third quarter and went on to complete the win giving Purefoods a four-game closing romp in the elimination round.

Alaska Milk drew level with San Miguel Beer on top with identical 13-5 win-loss slates. They both earned an outright semifinals seat.

Purefoods and Barangay Ginebra were next at 12-6, followed by Talk n Text at 11-7, Sta. Lucia at 10-8, Burger King and Coca-Cola at 6-12, Rain or Shine at 4-14 and Barako Bull at 3-15.

Individual Scores:

Purefoods 88 – Yap J. 19, Canaleta 17, Yap R. 12, Pingris 11, Raymundo 11, Artadi 9, Allado 7, Reavis 2, Timberlake 0, Maierhofer 0.

Sta. Lucia 78 – Yeo 17, Aquino 14, Urbiztondo 13, Williams 11, Omolon 9, Daa 6, Espinas 3, Waters 2, Mendoza 2, Misolas 1, Larong 0, Reyes 0.

Quarter Scores: 15-19, 41-35, 70-59, 88-78

Purefoods is no3, so we face them incase we survive the Wildcard. I’m very confident against RoS and i’m hoping BK will win against Coke. Biglang lumakas Coke with the rejuvenated Asi. And i also think nakaganda yung trade nila with Burger King.
Well, i still believe we’ll get through this. I’ve been a fan since they started and i’m not going to lose faith in them.
Win or Lose SLR pa rin.

When the game matters most for us just like our game against Purefoods last night our team always struggling. Next game is a do or die against Rain or Shine ( wildcard ). Another loss is a no no….This time mahihirapan ng ipagtanggol ni Coach Boyet iyong mga players na kinuha nila. Non performing players since the start of he conference are ARDY LARONG, MARK BENITEZ, CHARLES WATERS, CHRIS PACANA, retirable PAOLO MENDOZA, CHITO JAIME, and JASON MISOLAS.

Good thing Marlou Aquino is stepping up. Sad to say Gabby Espinas and Dennis Daa game are sinking.

The team really missed the solid playmaking of DENOK MIRANDA.

Again, STALUNAN na naman ang team naten.
Im a BELIEVER. And always a BELIEVER of this team that’s why im hurting with this kind of line up.

Kawawa naman ang FIRST FIVE naten. Kayod marino sila. Bugbog na bugbog na. And then, Wala silang maasahan sa bench players.

Sayang ang effort nila. I commend KELLY WILLIAMS, RYAN REYES, JOSEPH YEO, JOSH URBIZTONDO and NELBERT OMOLON.

i did not see the game since i am out of town, but again, if a team has the financial muscle they can get and entice the best player available, its not coach boyet fault anyway, he will run the team on the available arsenal, its the team owner and management financial capability, on that note, we will still a middle pack team, i agree reyes, yeo, williams and the emergence of urb should be reinforce by capable player.

Aquino,Waters,Pacana,Larong,Benitez,Mendoza,Misolas,Daa this are the players na for almost 2months sinasabi ni coach boyet na give them a chance kasi kaya daw niya pinili ito may role sa team at may nakita sila na hindi natin alm pero halatang halata na wala tlga ibubuga no room for improvment at waste of precious money na alm natin lahat na may problema tayo when it comes sa pera. Sana wag i trade si omolon i would rather trade espinas for a legit center or a first round pick this 2010.

i agree with rapsapapa! and for me, sana nga di nalang inalis sila cap, denok and norman at inalis nalang si paolo at iba pang walang kwenta pero binabayaran. kung gusto magtipid sana 10 to 12 man line-up nalang. ang dinagdag nalang si josh and gabi. im not used to seeing them struggle this way. last year understandable kasi di naman naglalaro si kwill and ryan pero now??? wishful thinking nanaman!!!

Cap iyong leadership niya good for 2 more years very good defense one on one lalo na sa low post and this conference he still good for 11 points and 7 rebounds kumpara sa mllki natin ngayon na c daa, benitez, lalo na si waters nakita ninyo ba kahapon mag free throw? parang kung shumoot ok kung hindi ok lang din!..We need players na could produce and help hindi iyong pabigat sa team.

Dapat talaga pag-isipan ng management na ma-improve ang budget ng team para makakuha ng magandang second unit next year AFC.For this coming 2nd conference and with the same line up, dapat kukuha tayo ng super import para makabawi.GO SLR Believe pa rin tayo!!! Gud Luck!!

But without any miracles ay wala talga mapipiga sa mga 2nd unit at malabo ang chance natin with our line up na pinagmamalaki ni CB.

Win or go home in PBA wild card Sunday

Two teams get to live for another day while the other pair bows out when the KFC-PBA Philippine Cup wild card stage is played Sunday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City.

Sta. Lucia plays Rain or Shine in the 4 p.m. curtain raiser while Burger King and Coca-Cola square off in the 6:30 p.m. main game.

Winners in the knockout-style playoff move on into the best-of-five quarterfinals beginning Wednesday.

Sta. Lucia is honest enough to admit it is wary of its match up against Rain or Shine, especially with the way the Elasto Painters almost pulled the rug from under the Alaska Aces on the final day of the eliminations Friday night, 95-94.

“Playing Rain or Shine is a tough match-up,” said Realtors coach Boyet Fernandez. “We have to play perfect. No tomorrow. We have to be ready.”

“It’s about who will want it more,” said Rain or Shine counterpart Caloy Garcia. “And we have to be physically and mentally ready.”

Sta. Lucia swept Rain or Shine in the 18-game eliminations but by close margins. Their first meeting was a thrilling 95-90 victory before another tense 95-91 win last Jan. 6.

Just as exciting is the Tigers and Whoppers showdown

The Tigers actually have not yet lost in 2010 and are now on a three-game winning roll, capped by a 93-91 triumph over Barako Bull last Jan. 20 on a buzzer-beating, turn-around jumper from Asi Taulava.

It was a win Coca-Cola really did not need, but the victory gave the Tigers the confidence they needed just the same against the Whopper, who likewise won their last assignment – an 87-80 win over the Aces last Wednesday.

Coach Yeng Guiao sees an interesting contest between his Whopper and the Tigers. The two teams split their two-game meeting in the preliminary round.

“We are ready for Coke,” said Guiao, whose resume does not include a championship in an all-Filipino tournament. “It’s going to be interesting because both teams got better with the trade. It’s going to come down to an exciting endgame. The team that’s tougher down the stretch is going to win it.”

Guiao, of course, was referring to the deal that sent Gary David and Chico Lanete to the Tigers in exchange for Alex Cabagnot and Wesley Gonzales.

The team that comes out on top in the wild card will go on to face Ginebra in the quarterfinals, with Purefoods meeting defending champion Talk ‘N Text in the other pairing.

Alaska wound up as the No. 1 seed with San Miguel Beer No. 2. Both teams will not see action until the semi-finals. – GMANews.TV

Again, Kelly Williams found himself leading the race for the best player of the conference (BPC) award entering the playoffs of the KFC-PBA Philippine Cup.

The Sta. Lucia forward averaged 40.1 statistical points (SPs) through 18 games. He was the league’s top rebounder with 14.4 per outing and the third leading scorer with a 17.82 average.
Sta. Lucia’s Kelly Williams, left, loses the ball against the defense of Barako Bull’s Leo Najorda in a recent PBA Philippine Cup game. Williams is again the leading contender for the best player of the conference award. GMANews.TV

He was league’s the league’s most valuable player (MVP) in the 2006-07 season.

But his shot of winning the tournament’s top individual honor would depend on whether the Realtors will be able to advance in the quarterfinal stage of the All-Filipino tournament.

Sta. Lucia is battling for survival against Rain or Shine, which it meets at the start of the wild card phase Sunday at the Ynares Sports Center.

A close second to Williams is San Miguel’s Arwind Santos, who is No. 2 in scoring (18.78 ppg) and third in rebounding (10.16), but will become the No. 1 contender if ever the Realtors do not advance past the quarterfinals.

The Beermen are already assured of a semi-finals berth, clinching the No. 2 spot with a 13-5 (win-loss) record.

Willie Miller of Alaska, the top-ranked team, is in third with an average SPs of 31.8 while Talk ‘N Text’s Mac Cardona, the leading scorer at 20.4 per game, is fourth with 31.4.

Rounding out the Top 10 contenders are: Ronald Tubid, Ginebra (fifth, 30.7); Joe DeVance, Alaska (sixth, 29.9); LA Tenorio, Alaska (seventh, 29.1); Harvey Carey, Talk ‘N Text (eighth, 27.9); Kerby Raymundo, Purefoods (ninth, 27.1); and Jimmy Alapag, Talk ‘N Text (10th, 27.0).

Former MVP James Yap is in 12th spot with 26.8 SPs.

Meanwhile, locked on a neck-and-neck battle for the Rookie of the Year plum are Purefoods’Rico Maierhofer and Josh Urbiztondo of Sta. Lucia.

Maierhofer, the second pick in the Rookie Draft, is leading with 20.8 SPs while Urbiztondo, a player who was not even drafted and merely picked from the free agent market, is close behind with 19.8. – GMANews.TV

    Ateneo’s Baclao eyes PBA

MANILA, Philippines – Nonoy Baclao, winner of the Best Player award in the Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) 2009 season, plans to join the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) so he can play with the country’s best hard court stars.

The 6-foot-4 power forward, who helped Ateneo win back-to-back championships in the University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP), said he plans to sign up for the country’s premier basketball league after he finishes his studies this year.

“Hangga’t maaari, tapusin ko yung pag-aaaral ko and then coming August siguro magpapadraft ako [sa PBA]. Basta tatapusin ko ang aral ko kasi ‘yun ang promise ko sa nanay ko,” said the 22-year-old Baclao.

Baclao, who received his PCCL Collegiate Player of the Year award last Friday, is currently playing for the Philippine Patriots in the Asean Basketball League (ABL).

He said his exposure to the international brand of play is also helping him prepare for the big league.

“Yung exposure [sa ABL], okay. Nae-expose kami sa physicality ng laro… para hindi na kami manibago sa PBA,” he said.

Baclao thanked members of the Ateneo team, particularly coach Norman Black, for helping him polish his game.

Under Black’s tutelage, the former West University standout, turned from pure scorer to a hard court leader. This earned him the nod for the PCCL Best Player plum.

“Coach taught us to make use of your teammates para manalo kayo. ‘Tsaka yung leadership in and outside the court,” he said.

For his part, Black said Baclao’s ability to transform himself from scorer to defender worked wonders for their team.

“When he joined our team, he pretty much boarded to his role on the team as a defender, as the guy who really supported Rabeh Al-Hussaini offensively,” said the multi-awarded coach.

“That’s probably why he was named player of the year. It’s not all about just how many points you score, but how well can you make your other team mates, how can you make them better players,” he added.

Well, that’s all she wrote.Great game for Josh,Kelly,Joseph,& Marlo.Too bad the rest of the players didn’t show up for the game.It was the Fireball’s hot 3 point hands in the fourth quarter that kept them in the game, I was surprised the coach took him out, I hope he realizes now that he can be a crucial go to guy, just like Kelly.Kelly should still be considered for best player of the conference and Josh should be the Rookie of the Year. What about all the missed free throws.Making them would have won the game.Better luck next conference.God Bless SLR.

I need to add to add a little criticism to what the coach should have told his players.Kelly needs to man up in the paint(he’s the biggest guy in the league)and he could be scoring 12 points a quarter easily instead of missing those fade away 3 pointers and when the fireball is hot , have your players feed the fire. The Fireball shot three 3 pointers in a row and they pass to Misolas twice and he misses, then the coach takes him out at another crucial time.
